Addressing limiting factors….
How do we know where to focus on with our coaching, programme design and sport specific skills.
Of course we can test, screen and all that stuff.
But what is that difference that makes the difference?
Here’s a useful slide from Tommy Yule’s recent course on productive strength training.
Tommy splits the limiting factors into 3 areas:
This is a nice way of looking at things.
Some things that spring to mind for us coaches.
Do you gravitate towards one area naturally? Do you look at physical issues predominantly? Irrespective of the person or people in front of you?
Are you all about the intent and the focus? And perhaps neglecting the technical aspects.
Look at your own coaching and gauge where you’re at currently.
What Tommy presents above is a checklist of areas that we need to be able to gauge where our athletes are.
A better way to approach this is not just to look at the columns vertically and check each point off.
How about the individual who has a history of mobility issues that are affecting his or her enjoyment and intent in training.
The solution to this is not to address the intent, its the mobility.
The individual who has great mobility but hasn’t become stronger because they train with no focus or intent. Address the right area.
Find the difference that makes the difference.
This is your chart putting that into context from an S&C perspective.
What other factors if any would you add to this?
