Changes, Adjustments, Refinements….
You have a few days before 2014 begins.
I’m in favour of reflection in this period.
It’s not possible to work at your best every day.
It’s not possible to perform at the highest level 12 months of the year, 7 days per week.
That’s what robots do, but then robots don’t create, they aren’t free thinkers, and they have been known to break down once or twice.
So downtime is a good thing.
This time of year it’s all about goals for 2014.
Big things are happening etc etc.
Just check Facebook you’ll see promises being made.
Promises to change things up.
Change might be the right thing for you.
But take a moment to classify your actions first.
Rationalise them. What are you really looking to achieve and by when?
Here’s three words (categories):
Change, Adjust, Refine.
Change is big. It’s about stopping something and starting something else.
Adjustments are smaller. Making a process better, changing something small. Building habits.
Refinements are improving what is already good.
It might be that all your goals fit into refining what you already do really well.
It might be that changes are required.
It might be that adjusting something sounds easier to you than changing it. So adjust it, along with your language too!
Whichever box they fit into you’ll need to put some actions there to make it happen.
Here’s a challenge for you.
Think of one thing to fit into each category.
Then think of at least one more thing that you’ll need to do to make it happen.
Start small. It happens by you doing it not talking about doing it.
Then consider when you will begin (no time like the present).
And then work to control habits until you begin so it becomes a more manageable transition.
And then do.
And don’t forget to enjoy along the way.
I’ll be in touch.
