Focussed or Distracted?
A friend of mine has so many brilliant ideas, yes brilliant, and none of them come off.
The challenge for him is focussing on one great idea, or maybe two.
What about you? Do you get led down a path that rarely goes anywhere?
It’s something I struggle with too.
It’s something that I’ve improved in myself A LOT. I can say that with conviction because i just know it to be true.
And it’s something I’ve noticed that is easy to fall back into if you’re not careful.
Focus can be learned. We work on this in the Level 4 S&C course. It’s as much about personal development as it is about the sets and reps.
Focus is a quality that comes when you know yourself and what your working towards.
I’m not a big ‘write your goals down’ person.
I like to keep moving forwards and have a vision of what I want.
Not exactly what it looks like, just a vision.
So long as what I’m doing contributes to that vision it then stays in the plan.
When something comes along that’s tempting to get involved in, here’s the question I ask.
Does this project, this opportunity, the time required, contribute to my long term vision?
It is worth the effort I would need to spend on it?
The busier you become the less time there is available and therefore the more precious it is.
Anyone can be busy and not get anything done, or build anything worthwhile.
The goal is not to be busy, but to build with quality.
Thats my filter.
Every now and again there’s a few things that you could do that might be awesome but might not.
I like to have a couple of things burning away in the background that might blow up sometime soon.
Not taking up too much time, just burning away a little bit in the distance. They are nice projects. They are the ones that could be really cool.
But a couple of these things is enough.
Don’t let them take over everything in the present.
Ultimately, the goal is to get stuff done. To produce things with quality. To make things happen.
That’s what you’ll judge yourself on, and others will too.
Ideas are not things that you get done, but glimmers of light in the distance.
So as long as you produce and build things today you can have ideas for tomorrow.
You can earn some distractions when you get something done.
Keep on pushing,
