Don’t give away the good stuff too early…
There is not one ‘best’ programme.
The ‘best’ programme is the most appropriate one at any given point in time.
That means that there are lots of ‘best’ programmes throughout an athlete or clients career.
Lots of methods, protocols, options and routes to take.
Not just one way.
The best advice is fit the programme to the athlete, not the sport.
Train the athlete in front of you.
It’s about what they need not what we want to do with them.
(Very often we get this wrong and make it about us).
Let’s not move too far away from the principles.
Principle based coaching means adhering to the things that we just can’t argue with.
The principle of starting with the end in mind and reverse engineering.
Why do 4 sets when 3 will work.
Why go to 10 minutes when 5 will do the job.
Let’s do the minumum it takes to create the adaption we are seeking.
“Don’t give away the good stuff too early” advice given by Dan Baker on this very subject.
The question….would you use bands and chains with youth athletes?
Interesting thoughts from Dan, because using bands and chains with young athletes is ignoring the principles and making it about us.
Academy athletes need to be progressively overloaded.
Moving from 4 sets of 5 basic strength to bands and chains is not progressive. That’s about us and our need to go advanced too early.
It’s also about time.
Whilst we can still keep getting stronger using traditional methods let’s do that.
Let’s take the opportunities and spend as long as we can with the fundamental methods before incorporating more advanced tools.
We might not ever get that opportunity again, and we certainly won’t get that time back with our clients.
Use it wisely.
Kelvin talks about earning the right.
Stick with this and if in doubt,
