SCE Archives: Coaching…You lead the way, the scientists follow.
First published in November 2012, this is a post that we felt needed to be heard again. Never more than before are people screaming about evidence based practice. Well what about practice based evidence?
Here’s the post word for word from 2012.
Stop waiting for the research to show you what you should be doing in your programmes. You might be waiting a long, long time I’m afraid and even then it might not support your work.
Read the books and journals for sure, let them guide you, but not rule you.
Watch your athletes move, see what they need to improve and be creative.
Here’s some recent words from Vern Gambetta on the same subject:
Is it evidence based? Do you have peer-reviewed research to back that up? These are questions I get constantly. I certainly understand that point of view, but coaching is about performance. I know the science, I study the research but coaching is about producing measureable results in the competitive arena. I do not know a coach who is worth their salt who will wait for peer-reviewed research to design their training programs.
The scientists design their research based on what we do as coaches and not the other way round. They can help us with data when we need it.
Lead the way…..
