Balance training…The secret to long term results
Life is a balancing act.
A recent conversation with a Head S&C coach sparked some thoughts on managing expectations and the old conundrum of need to do versus nice to do.
There are things that we need to do to improve.
Whether it’s daily, weekly, monthly, hourly, they just need to be done.
There are things that we enjoy doing and given a choice we might do too much of.
It’s (very) fortunate if the things you need to do are actually the thinks you like to do. For all aspects of your life this balances itself out I think.
What we need to do is improve in managing the needs and the likes.
Here are some scenarios that may or may not resonate with you.
If you’re not progressing as fast as you want in your job, business, life maybe you’re doing too much of what you like and not enough of what you need.
If you’re not getting on with people in your network, support team, relationships maybe you’re demanding what you like from them and not giving enough back of what they like.
If you’re not getting the buy in to the programme from your clients, perhaps your giving them too much of what they need and not enough of what they like.
Be prepared to give more than you get. This mindset will serve you well. Long term results and relationships are about balance. When one side gets too heavy the whole thing falls down.
Perhaps the lesson to learn here is that no matter what level we’re at we always need to be rewarded in some way. Otherwise why move forwards at all. This means there absolutely must be some of what we like in the equation.
What you reward yourself or your clients with is your choice.
Here’s a task for you.
Start with yourself.
Write down what you’re doing to move forwards on a daily basis.
Write down the activities you rewarded yourself with, that weren’t moving you forwards but were ‘nice’ to do.
Use today as a starting point and go back 3 or 4 days.
If the need to do outscore the nice to do by at least 5:1 just keep going.
If not I would offer to you that you might be better focussing on your goals for a week and see what results you can get.
Then look at your relationships and your clients. How to you balance out those and get better results.
This one is something you need to think through by yourself.
Remember, if you’re not getting good feedback from the messages you’re sending…change the message.
