8 million UK people have this problem, do you?
It’s financial capability week, this week I’m told.
A quick google search and it saddens me that the following statistics are apparently true:
- 27 million don’t have a sufficient savings buffer to allow them to cope with a significant income shock
- 21 million don’t have a modest £500 savings buffer to replace a fridge or mend the car
- 19 million don’t have an approach to budgeting that they feel works
- Around 8 million have problems with debt
- Four in ten adults have less than £500 savings to cover an unexpected bill.

It’s a fairly safe assumption that these figures would hold true for the fitness industry.
It may be that the situation is even worse in fitness.
Shooting from the hip I’d say because most training providers simply just DO NOT prepare their students for the real world.
The reality that it’s NOT about sets and reps and it’s actually about engaging with people, coaching them, building relationships, and your business and marketing ability.
It frustrates me that we don’t work harder on this as an industry. It’s a poor reflection and we don’t give people the chance they need.
I can 100% say that there is another way and success can be achieved if you are prepared to push hard for it.
Let me take you through the 3 pillars. It’s what our level 4 mentoring programme is centred around.
Here they are:
Pillar 1: Coach Development
Pillar 2: Personal Development
Pillar 3: Business and Career Development
Coach development is about improving as a coach. Becoming a better technician. Building a deeper understanding and an ability to more accurately and confidently answer the following question:
‘Why are you doing what you are doing?’’
It’s important. But not as important as pillar 2.
Pillar 2: Personal development is all about WHO you are..What you really want to do and more importantly WHY you really want to do it?
This is the scary stuff. You actually have to accept you have some weaknesses, and of course that you have some strengths and probably some super strengths.
Some questions we tend to ask:
Do you really want to work in elite sport? Or do you want to work with some great athletes and have a great business?
Do you really want to open that warehouse gym and have the headaches that go with it? Or is it more about being a fantastic coach and working with great people?
The clearer you can be on this the more likely it is to happen.
The pillar 3 (Business and career development) then kicks in. Once you know what you want and why, it’s then about HOW you’re going to get there.
It might be getting that first job in professional sport.
It might be opening that performance gym you always wanted.
It might be generating more leads and turning them into customers.
No doubt about it you’ll need to learn some new skills and actually get out of your comfort zone.
It’s amazing how many people don’t know what to do in an interview. Or don’t’ know how to network and make connections that will be valuable for years to come.
This is actually the hardest and most impactful for the three pillars.
Some of our students have said “what but doing that hard work means that I’ll have to reduce my training…I might lose my 6 pack”…
Yes my friend, welcome to the real world. You actually might have to reduce your training until your actually on your feet and actually have a business or career.
How badly do you want it? Rest assured you’ll need to work hard and there will be some days where you’ll have your head in your hands.
But on those days remember this…’tomorrow is another day’. You WILL make progres forwards if you continue moving forwards.
Or you can keep training.
The tools to succeed are right in front of you. In fact more so than ever before. Just go on youtube and search for ‘how to approach an interview’ or anything that’s relevant to you.
Every fitness professional can build something they are proud of, something that’s sustainable and something that helps hundreds and thousands of people.
But in order to succeed you must take action to create that success. We must focus on ALL of the three pillars and not just one or two.
So please do go out there and make it happen for yourself.

Have a beautiful day 🙂
